What an hour of drama and singing covers
Every Saturday session runs the same way. An hour of dance comes first, then a thirty minute break for snacks, then a full hour of drama and singing. Your child does all three, and one weekly fee covers the lot. The drama hour works through acting games, expressing emotion and building a character. The singing hour covers vocal exercises, vocal control and harmonising with the rest of the group. Older students move on to stage singing and, in the senior group, solo performance. Nothing is bolted on. Drama and singing have been half of a Saturday at SMPA since 2002.

Juniors (3–6 years) – Spark Their Imagination
In our junior classes, we focus on fun, imagination, and self-expression. Through dance, drama, and singing, your child will start building their coordination, motor skills, and confidence. It’s the perfect way to introduce them to the world of performing arts playfully and engagingly.

Inters 1 (7–10 years) – Begin Their Artistic Journey
As children grow, they begin to develop more refined skills in dance, drama, and singing. Our inters 1 classes focus on technique, coordination, and performance skills. This is where your child will start to build a strong foundation for their future artistic journey.

Inters 2 (11–14 years) – Perfecting Their Craft
The inters 2 students dive deeper into the world of performance. With a focus on advanced dance moves, drama scenes, and vocal technique, this group takes their skills to the next level. Expect a more structured approach that prepares them for exams and stage performances.

Seniors (14-18 years) – Preparing for the Spotlight
Seniors take their talents to a professional level. These classes focus on honing dance, drama, and singing skills with the aim of preparing students for auditions, performances, and ISTD examinations. Whether your child aspires to pursue a career in performing arts or simply loves the craft, we’ll provide the support they need to succeed.

How drama and singing change with age
There are four age groups and the work steps up in each. Juniors, aged three to six, start with acting games and vocal exercises aimed at confidence rather than technique. Inters 1, seven to ten, move on to expressing emotion and character, and to holding a harmony with others. Inters 2, eleven to fourteen, take on dramatic technique and vocal technique for stage singing. Seniors, fourteen to eighteen, work on character depth and solo singing, with auditions in mind for anyone heading that way.
Starting out when your child is shy
Solo singing does not appear until the senior group. Before that, everything is done as a group, which is the point. Juniors spend their year on acting games and vocal exercises with confidence as the stated aim, not technique, so a child speaks up among others long before they are asked to do anything alone. Parents of children who started at three regularly describe a different child by nine or ten. The two week pay as you go trial exists for exactly this decision. You can watch how your child settles before you commit to a term.

SMPA rocks!
My 2 daughters have been attending SMPA since they were 3 and are now 9 & 11. They just love it. It is the highlight of their week - they just love learning to dance, sing and do drama in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The shows every other year are definitely a massive hit! I would recommend SMPA to anyone whose child loves to move and sing!
